Marble and quartzite are often confused, yet they are geologically distinct stones with very different day-to-day behaviour. Choosing between them is less about looks and more about how, and where, the surface will live.
What sets them apart
Marble is a metamorphosed limestone, prized for its soft veining and luminous depth. It is a calcium-based stone, which means it can etch when it meets acids like lemon, vinegar or wine. Quartzite, by contrast, begins life as sandstone and recrystallises into one of the hardest natural surfaces available, highly resistant to scratches and heat.
Where each one shines
For low-traffic luxury, vanity tops, feature walls, formal spaces, marble rewards you with a character no engineered surface can match. For kitchen islands, busy worktops and commercial counters, quartzite offers marble-like beauty with far greater resilience.
