How to Care for Italian Marble Floors

May 2026 · 4 min read

Italian marble, Statuario, Calacatta, Botticino, is an investment that can outlive the building it sits in, provided it is cared for correctly. The good news: the routine is simple.

Daily and weekly

Dust-mop daily to remove grit, which is the main cause of micro-scratches. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft cloth, never vinegar, lemon or generic bathroom sprays, which etch the calcium surface. Wipe spills immediately, especially wine, coffee and citrus.

Sealing and polishing

A penetrating sealer applied every 12–18 months keeps liquids from soaking in. For high-traffic floors, a professional re-polish every few years restores the original lustre. Use felt pads under furniture and entrance mats to trap abrasive grit before it reaches the stone.
